Some Irish Dancing Links

Quote of the Page

...there are more books about books than any other subject: we do nothing but write glosses about each other.

Michel de Montaigne, Essays, "On Experience"

What I have here is a list of links, in which each link consists of a lists of links to other lists, and hidden somewhere among all these are resources about dancing, and Irish dancing in particular. It seems silly to list other people's lists of links, but if I only listed the little bits I could find that actually deal with Irish dancing, I'd go crazy trying to find and list them all, and I wouldn't give anyone else the pleasure I had in roaming the various sites looking for them.

San Francisco Bay Area Irish Dancing and Culture

First I need to list my own little page about the Starry Plough. This has some basic information about the pub, and the Monday night Irish Dancing Session there.

Next is a group that I've only recently discovered- the Irish Cultural Society, which has information about the class they're giving on Irish Dancing in the South Bay on Tuesday nights.

Then there's a listing of an Irish Ceili in San Francisco, part of the Irish Traditional Dance page, which puts my poor efforts to shame.

Finally, a little bit of the history of Irish Dancing.

Other Irish Dance/Culture sites

Joris Alkema has a folk dance page that's also worth at least a glance.

Here's a page on Irish music, though it's not so big on Irish dancing.

P. Murphy's Irish and Celtic Thingies is a really large cool site that has many resources for all aspects of Celtic culture. It's a good starting place, whatever your interest in things Celtic.

I've just found out about The Irish Dance Web Ring, an enormous collection of links about Irish dancing. Dive in and take a look!

Music that you can dance to

This page wouldn't be complete without some mention of the bands I've seen who've tolerated our dancing, or sometimes even encouraged us to dance to their music.

Annwn is a local band that I first saw live about three years ago, and which has been improving steadily since then and has now turned into a group I wouldn't want to miss in concert.

Tempest is the band Annwn often opens for in the shows I've seen. They're a great combination of traditional music and modern instruments and style. Don't jump up to dance a reel, however, if the song they announce is "The Winding Road".

Another band, which I've seen only once and would like to see again, is the Young Dubliners. They're a good band who doesn't tour the Bay Area often enough.
